10 Julia Child Birthday
Tributes, Stories & Recipes
Celebrating Julia Childโs birthday has become an annual tradition here on Taste With The Eyes. Every August, I find another reason to return to Juliaโto cook one of her recipes, revisit a story from her remarkable life, or simply celebrate the joy and curiosity she brought to the kitchen. After so many years of birthday tributes, it seemed like the perfect time to gather some of my favorites together in one place.
Julia changed the way Americans thought about French cooking, but her influence went far beyond recipes and technique. She made ambitious cooking seem possible, mistakes seem perfectly acceptable, and the kitchen a place for learning, laughter, and a good appetite. Her enthusiasm for food was irresistible, and decades later she remains just as much fun to cook with. Here are ten Julia Child birthday tributes from over the yearsโrecipes, stories, memorable meals, and a few adventures inspired by the incomparable Julia Child.

Julia Child Tributes
Halibut Cheeks with Julia Childโs Beurre Blanc (here)

For Juliaโs birthday in 2026, I served tender poached halibut cheeks with her classic beurre blanc, finished with jewel-like salmon roe and fresh chives. Simple, elegant, and very much in the spirit of Julia: start with wonderful ingredients and treat them well. And as she famously said, โWith enough butter, anything is good.โ

Julia Childโsย Escargots ร la Bourguignonneย at a Parisian Bistrot (here)

Just beyond the doors of Julia and Paul Childโs apartment at 81 Rue de lโUniversitรฉ, the narrow Paris streets settle into a golden, late-summer hush. It is August 15th, Juliaโs birthday, and Paul has planned a special surprise.
They arrive at Bistrot Atalorรฉ. โBon anniversaire, Madame Child,โย the maรฎtre dโ says graciously, bowing ever so slightly.ย โNous sommes honorรฉs de cรฉlรฉbrer avec vous ce soir.โ
He guides them to a private little table in the back corner, away from the gentle bustle of the dining room. As he hands them the menus, he leans in conspiratorially. โYou must begin with our escargots โ a specialty of the house. Divine garlic butter, perfect for dunking with our fresh-baked baguette.”
In 2025, I shared her recipe for Escargots ร la Bourguignonne.

A Ladies Birthday Luncheon in Paris and Juliaโs Coquilles St. Jacques Recipe (here)

In 2024 I recreated a birthday party at her home in Paris.
Imagine Julia Child hosting her own birthday party today, August 15th. Sheโs invited you and four other girlfriends to an intimate luncheon at her home in Paris at 81 Rue de lโUniversitรฉ in the 7th arrondissement.
To start the meal, Julia chose her recipe forย Coquilles St. Jacques ร la Provenรงale, sea scallops gratinรฉed with wine, garlic, and herbs. Which she serves with crusty baguettes and chilled rosรฉ. She says,ย โThis good recipe may be prepared in advance and gratinรฉed just before serving.โย Just a few minutes under the broiler, and her elegant little starter is ready to go!

Chicken Liver Pรขtรฉย at a Birthday Luncheon with Jacques Pรฉpin (here)

In 2023 I imagine her dear, long-time friend, Jacques Pรฉpin, inviting her over for an intimate luncheon that begins with her favorite upside-down martini. The first course includes his famous chicken liver pรขtรฉ with toasted baguette, radishes from the garden with Maldon sea salt and European-style butter, cornichons and cocktail onions.

Julia and Jacques Prepareย Gravlaxย Together (here)

In 2022, we watched a super-charming episode of the cooking show Julia and Jacques: Cooking at Home โITโS SALMON DAY!โย where they go on to prepare a half-dozen salmon dishes together.

We spotlighted their gravlax presentations from the show and from their cookbook. Julia calls hers โQuick Gravlaxโ and Jacques calls his โInstant Gravlax.โ Both different and both fabulous.

Juliaโs Cambridge Kitchen and Recipe forย Vichyssoiseย (here)

In 2021 we traveled back in time to Cambridge, Massachusetts where I imagine dinner at the kitchen table of Paul and Julia Child as they enjoy a light supper including her Vichyssoise, together on a hot August night.

โAn excellent light supper need be no more than a good soup, a salad, cheese and fruit. And combined according to your own taste, a good homemade soup in these days of the can opener is almost a unique and always a satisfying experience,โย says Julia.
Juliaโsย Upside-Down Martiniย (here)

In 2020, we raised a toast to Julia with one of her favorite cocktails, the Upside-Down Martini also known as a reverse or โwetโ martini, made with five parts vermouth to one part gin.
With naturally less alcohol than a traditional martini, Julia would say, โThe best thing about a reverse martini is that you can have two of them!โ
Juliaโs First Meal in France and Her Famous Recipe forย Sole Meuniรจreย (here)

Here, I re-create Julia Childโs very first meal in France, one that she experienced with her husband Paul Child. The story takes place in Rouen, France in November of 1948.
The text is as she describes her meal to us inย My Life in France by Julia Child with Alex Prudโhomme, published by Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 2006. The re-creation photographs are ones that I have taken on my travels; some are from France, others from California, a couple are shot in my own home. I use the sepia tone to give the images the feel of a single place almost 80 years ago.

Come, letโs travel back in time and enjoy French food and revel in its perfection via Juliaโฆ

Figs and Sabayonย ร la Julia Child (here)

Back in 2015 it is was my sweet pleasure to share Figs and Sabayon ร la Julia Child, a dessert of Macerated Fresh Black Mission Figs and Marsala-French Vermouth Sabayon with Roasted Hazelnuts, Maldon Sea Salt, and Borage.

Julia says,ย โThe trick with sabayon is to heat the sauce close to 180ยฐF, so it thickens beautifully without letting the yolks scramble. When it is fully cooked, driblets of the sauce from the whisk will form a soft, melting ribbon on the surface.โ Fromย Julia and Jacques Cooking at Homeย by Julia Child andย Jacques Pรฉpin
Julia Child Floribunda Roses

There is even a rose named for Julia Child, and for several years I grew the Julia Child Floribunda in my garden in Los Angeles.
Bred by Tom Carruth and introduced by Weeks Roses in 2006, it was an All-America Rose Selections winner that same year. Julia herself selected this rose to bear her name, drawn to its butter-gold color and distinctive licorice fragrance.
I always thought of these roses as the color of butter. But not all butter is the same shade of yellow, and neither were the roses in my garden. Some blossoms were a deep golden yellow, others a softer buttery yellow, and as they aged, some became pale and creamy, almost ivory.
Often several of those shades appeared together on the same plant, as you can see in my photographs.
I paired the butter-colored Julia Child Floribunda Roseย (of course) and the wonderfully fragrantย April in Paris Hybrid Tea Roseย in an un-fussy arrangement for Juliaโs birthday.
Bon appรฉtit โ and joyeux anniversaire, Julia!
